The Cabaret Winter Workshop is a ground-breaking 2-week course designed to help up and coming cabaret performers to attain the unique skills needed to devise, produce and perform their own cabaret show.

This workshop is the first one of it’s kind in Australia. Led by cabaret and musical theatre star, Queenie van de Zandt, along with a Who’s Who of cabaret in Australia including: Jonathan Biggins(Co-writer, director, & performer of the STC’s Wharf Review), David Harris (Legally Blonde, Miss Saigon, Wicked), iOTA (Smoke & Mirrors, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Great Gatsby) and more.

The workshop will also feature the Who’s Who of cabaret in Australia, including:

Director DEAN BRYANT

DEAN BRYANT Dean is thrilled to be making history directing Sweet Charity, the very first production at Hayes Theatre Co. Dean recently directed The Pirates of Penzance for The Production Company, having co-directed The Producers and Anything Goes for them previously. His other directing credits include Next to Normal for Melbourne Theatre Company, Straight for Red Stitch, Hansel and Gretel for OzOpera, The Last Five Years, Prodigal (45DS), Once We Lived Here (45DS) and Virgins: A Musical Threesome (CUB Malthouse). Dean is worldwide Associate Director of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert – The Musical (Australia, West End, Broadway, Italy, Brazil, UK Tour). He was also Associate Director for the world premiere of An Officer and a Gentleman, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and the MTC productions of The Drowsy Chaperone, Spelling Bee, Hitchcock Blonde and Urinetown.

ANDREW HALLSWORTH Andrew's most recent choreographic credits include David Williamson’s Rupert for Melbourne Theatre Company, Gypsy and The Pirates of Penzance for The Production Company, Shane Warne The Musical in concert, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, starring Geoffrey Rush, the World Premiere musical An Officer and A Gentleman and the Broadway, Italian, Brazilian, Swedish, US and UK Tour productions of Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

Andrew Worboys Andrew has been the musical director many productions including his own original musical SHOWTRAIN, Christine Anu’s INTIMATE AND DEADLY, Trevor Ashley’s I’M EVERY WOMAN, Queenie van der Zandt’s I GET THE MUSIC IN YOU, AMY HOUSEWINE BACK TO CRACK, VARIATIONS for Neglected Musicals, Jimmy Sommerville’s EVOLVE Australian Tour, FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE - CEREMONIALS Australian Orchestral Tour and is currently musical director and performer in the 2013 Sydney Theatre Company’s WHARF REVUE.

Costume & Wig Design TIM CHAPPEL

Tim ChappelTim Chappel has won an Academy Award, BAFTA and an AFI for his costume design for Priscilla Queen of the Desert and has worked on many other feature films such as Miss Congeniality and Red Riding Hood, he has also worked on costume design on music video clips for Missy Elliot, Cher and Matchbox 20.

Set Design OWEN PHILLIPS

Owen PhillipsOwen Phillips is a Melbourne-based set and costume designer who graduated from NIDA Recent credits as set and/or costume designer include Sisters Grimm’s The Sovereign Wife as part of the inaugural MTC Neon season, Psycho Beach Party for Little Ones Theatre/Tamarama Rock Surfers The Production Company’s The Pirates of Penzance Gaybies for Midsumma Festival Straight for Red Stitch Actors Theatre, Iphigénie en Tauride and Elle for Melbourne Lyric Opera, Wrecking for Tamarama Rock Surfers/Fat Boy Dancing, Sprout for Tamarama Rock Surfers/Pedro Collective and A Very Crappy Christmas as part of GRIFFringe.

VERITY HUNT-BALLARD as Charity Hope Valentine

Verity Hunt Ballard You will mainly know Verity as Mary Poppins for which she received a Helpmann Award for Best Female Actor in a Musical, a Green Room Award for Best Female Artist in a Leading Role in Music Theatre, and nominations for Sydney Theatre Award, Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical and a Glug Award nomination, Best Female Actor in Music Theatre – Mary Poppins. Also on stage in Shane Warne The Musical Concert, Jersey Boys, The Rocky Horror Show and, After the Beep for the Adelaide Cabaret Festival and Metro Street at the State Theatre Company of SA, for which she won a Theatre Critics Award for Best Female Performance. Verity graduated from WAAPA in 2003 and made her television drama debut in the ABC series The Doctor Blake Mysteries.

MARTIN CREWES as Charlie/Vittorio/Oscar

Martin Crewes Since graduating from the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), Martin Crewes has performed leading roles in Australia, the UK and Asia, enjoying a successful career in film, theatre and television. Martin has enjoyed a phenomenal stage career, performing in Gordon Frost Organisation’s Doctor Zhivago and South Pacific, the Production Company’s Chess and Hair, the Really Useful Company’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and Aspects of Love, Majestic Theatre Company’s Oh! What a Night, Momo Films “8” The Play, Kevin Jacobsen’s/David Atkins The Man From Snowy River Arena Spectacular and Victoria State Opera’s West Side Story. Martin played the role of ‘Marius’ in Cameron Mackintosh’s production of Les Miserables, performing in the West End, Asia and South Africa. His other work in the UK includes Pal Joey and The Woman in White directed by Trevor Nunn for Chichester Festival Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare’s Company’s production of Merry Wives The Musical. Martin is a highly accomplished singer; he performed the Opening Number of the Royal Variety Performance in London, he sang the role of Marius in the Scandinavian Concert Tour of Les Miserables and has performed in orchestral concerts throughout Europe and the UK.

DEBORA KRIZAK as Nikki/Ursula

DEBORA KRIZAK Debora launched into musical theatre after being offered Mel Brooks’ “The Producers” where she also understudied the role of Swedish secretary, Ulla. From there she went on to appear in “Titanic – a new musical” for Seabiscuit Productions playing the role of Madame Aubert and following this, she was invited to be a walk in cover to Rhonda Burchmore in “Respect the Musical”.

After giving birth to twins in 2008, Debora was soon back in lycra playing the role of “Shania” in Guy Noble’s “Karaoke The Musical”. Debora’s most recent and notable credits include playing the role of ‘Sheila’ in the 2012 Helpmann Award winning Musical – A Chorus Line. Nominated for numerous awards including a Helpmann for Best Supporting Actress, Sydney Theatre critics and GLUG awards as well as winning ‘Theatre People’s’ most popular actress in a musical.

Lisa Sontag Lisa Sontag’s credits include Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Mary Poppins, Boy From Oz and Frenchy in Grease The Arena Spectacular.

KUKI TIPOKI as Big Daddy

Kuki Tipoki Kuki is an acclaimed guitarist and live musician and his credits include Shout, The Boy From Oz, Fiddler On The Roof, Grease The Arena Spectacular and South Pacific.

Kirby Burgess Kirby’s credits include An Officer and a Gentleman, Hairspray and the acclaimed feature film The Great Gatsby.
