tbaapoy 136In a premiere production, Tim Freedman and Alex Broun's Truth, Beauty and a Picture of You played at Hayes Theatre Co until Sunday, 1 June 2014.

Truth, Beauty and a Picture of You is about the hope you find when all hope seems gone, as four lost souls struggle to find peace with themselves and their pasts. If they can’t they’ll just have to move to Marrickville. Featuring many of Tim’s biggest hits from a life in music this new Australian musical theatre work is moving, funny and surprisingly romantic.

Tom’s dad Stewie used to be in a band. They were big – sort of. Legends on three blocks in the inner-west. That was many years ago and Stewie has long since gone to the big pub gig in the sky while the surviving band members, Anton and Charlie, are wrestling with their own personal demons - Charlie is holding up the front bar in a succession of pubs on King St while Anton just wants the past to stay in the past while he disappears into a blur of mediocrity. When Tom arrives in town from Taree to search out his dad’s old band mates, the slow decline of Anton and Charlie is rudely interrupted.

Truth, Beauty and a Picture of You was directed by Neil Gooding and featured an extraordinary cast of Sydney’s finest musical theatre talent including Ian Stenlake (Sea Patrol and Guys and Dolls), Scott Irwin (Hairspray and Les Miserables), Erica Lovell (Spring Awakening and Little Women), Toby Francis (Carrie and Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson) and Ross Chisari (Spring Awakening and The Drowsy Chaperone).

Truth, Beauty and a Picture of You, featured many of The Whitlams’ biggest hits from their four platinum albums performed live including Laugh in their Faces, God Drinks at the Botany View (now that the Sando's changed its name), Blow Up The Pokies, Buy Now Pay Later (Charlie No. 2), Beauty in Me, No Aphrodisiac, Fall for You, Charlie No. 1, You Gotta Love This City, Fondness Makes the Heart Grow Absent and Keep the Light On.

Produced and directed by Neil Gooding for Hayes Theatre Co, the production is extremely well staged in the intimate venue

This certainly is a musical that would be a strong contender for a main stage production with one of our State based theatre companies.
