Mitchell Butel In KillingTime Main

Killing Time

Written by Mitchell Butel
Musical Director Daryl Wallis

Three-time Helpmann Award winner (and voice of the Playschool theme song to boot) Mitchell Butel returns to the Sydney cabaret stage after star turns in The Government Inspector, Angels in America, Orpheus in the Underworld, The Mikado, Forum, Gettin’ Square, Meow Meow’s Little Match Girl and Avenue Q in a hilarious and occasionally sentimental tale of 24 hours in the life of himself and of all our selves. Backed by a white-hot jazz trio led by Nigel Ubrihien, Butel weaves his way through a night of song including works by Ellington, Berlin, Jarreau, Bernstein, Mercer, Arlen, Elling, Sondheim and Parton…sorry, what, Dolly Parton? Really??

Killing Time premiered at Hayes Theatre Co as part of the Month of Sundays program in November 2014 to sell-out performances.

Butel sprinkles the show with abundant charm as he spins a sunrise-to-sunrise cycle of songs. The other ace up his sleeve is even rarer among cabaret performers than charm: he takes risks. - John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald

Butel’s voice is a full-bodied instrument that’s one moment gently soothing and sentimental and then full of idiosyncratic characteristics and sharp comedic timing. There aren’t many actors able to do what Butel does. - Ben Neutze, Daily Review

A beautifully conceived vehicle to showcase Butel’s versatility and his trademark ebullience. Dynamic, elegant and witty from beginning to end. - Rebecca Whitton, Australian Stage Online
